Organic Angelica

About the ingredient

Angelica is a tall ancestral plant from the Umbelliferae family,
known for its tremendous vitality. It grows incredibly fast due to its
exceptional ability for self hydration. Its secret lies in its deep roots. Just
like water channels, they trap the water that is needed to feed this tall
plant, all the way up to its flower.

Angelica water reinforces skin’s natural hydration, while
stimulating the synthesis of aquaporins, the water channels of the skin. The
essential oil, made from the roots, has toning and stimulating properties. As a
skincare ingredient, angelica essential oil protects skin from free radicals (destabilized
atoms) and improves its elasticity.

About the
region/relationship

Angelica is believed to have been brought to France during the
Middle Ages, or even earlier, where it was used both for its excellent
medicinal properties and as an herb for cooking. Legend has it that in the 18th
century, a man from the city of Nice in France, lived until the age of 123
years old thanks to its habit of chewing angelica roots.

Today, Angelica is cultivated for a number of different uses. All
parts of the plant can be used: the stems and stalks can be candied, while the
root and fruits are distilled. In its products, L’OCCITANE uses both Angelica water
and Angelica essential oil to reinforce natural skin hydration.

Traceability

70 years ago, the grandfather of Monsieur Nivon set up a farm near
the village of Lapeyrouse Mornay, in the Drôme region of France. It became a family business now carried on
by Monsieur Nivon, following in the footsteps of his father and
grandfather.  For the past twelve years,
he has grown angelica.  In 2005, the angelica
that he grows for L’OCCITANE was certified organic.
